Yesterday, in an announcement from the 2022 CES Conference held in Las Vegas, Samsung revealed that the company will be using blockchain technology to plant two million mangrove trees in an effort to mitigate and combat climate changes.

The company plans on using the Cardano (ADA) blockchain, specifically, to utilize Veritree for attaching a digital ID to each of the trees planted. Veritree is a global blockchain solutions provider based on the Cardano blockchain that’s geared for nature-based environmental protection projects. It will enable Samsung to monitor the complete planting of these two million mangrove trees and track the planting progress of each tree.

Samsung says that the primary goal of this project is to restore about 200 hectares of land (494.2 acres) with trees. Samsung also points out that the project is estimated to capture and nullify the CO2 output (about 1 billion pounds) in approximately 25 years.

In addition, the head of corporate sustainability of Samsung, Mark Newton, states that investing in nature-centric technologies is essential to combat climate change.

Bullish For Cardano?

While the announcement won’t bring major adoption directly to the Cardano ecosystem, I think this news shows an interesting example of the possibilities made possible by the blockchain and Cardano specifically. Samsung’s endorsement of Veritree could help Cardano place itself above the competition in the eco-friendly niche of smart contract platforms.

Cardano claims to be one of the “greenest” smart contract platforms out there. Its mining process consumes less energy compared to other crypto projects, with the entire network using just 6 GWh of power annually. This acknowledgment by Samsung proves that the Cardano blockchain is not only being adopted but being put to use for environmentally conscious projects.

Not only this, but it’s clear that Samsung has Cardano on its eyes, and probably lots of other cryptocurrencies too. While the mainstream tech world has yet to embrace the crypto ecosystem fully, Samsung’s utilization of the Cardano blockchain reveals a short glimpse into the future of the possibilities in a blockchain-based world.
