Some Additional Thoughts on Vasil (with better internet) https://t.co/kfVyTWj8e8

— Charles Hoskinson (@IOHK_Charles) August 19, 2022

Tensions over Cardano’s delayed Vasil upgrade have come to a boiling point. Adam Dean, a Cardano developer and podcast host, took to Twitter to tell CT how poorly the testnet is going.

“It’s important to point out today that the #Cardano #Testnet is **catastrophically** broken due to a bug in Cardano Node v 1.35.2,” Dean said. He would go on to clarify that the issues were, “because operators rushed to upgrade on #Mainnet and it was creating incompatible forks and causing a decrease to chain density.”

Moreover, he also noted that “Testnet is still broken, due to the majority of operators having upgraded to 1.35.2.” Up to that point Dean was staying fairly grounded, until he chose the nuclear option.

“To say that this level of “rushing” gives me uneasy feelings is an understatement. If there were a “nuclear clock” for #Cardano we got perilously close to hitting “midnight”…,” Dean said.

In fact, you could say that’s why they exist to uncover these sort of things before launch. Funny enough, Ethereum has had its fair share of testnet hiccups during ETH 2.0. However, their hiccups failed to inspire anywhere near as much teenage poetry.

Nevertheless, the emotional language Dean used triggered a barrage of the typical FUD, and fatalistic thinking — like the below tweet.

I think they know the current system has foundational design flaws that cannot be fixed, but they won't admit this. So, they'll backdoor the collapse of the chain by pushing out a node that they fully know will catastrophically void the chain. This is just my thinking…

Obviously, Cardano founder and CEO Charles Hoskinson wasn’t going to take this lying down.

Charles Hoskinson Responds To Developer

“There’s a narrative that’s floating around… it’s incredibly corrosive and damaging, and it’s gotta stop,” Hoskinson said referring to the “broken” testnet bruhaha.

All told, the majority of Cardano’s Vasil update has worked as planned, but nevertheless, a narrative has spun up that the whole thing is a mess. “It’s very important to understand… the vast majority of the new features, the code, the capabilities of 135.3 have already been tested and integrated against when the testnet was out,” Hoskinson said during a surprise AMA.

Hoskinson also called for community members to keep it in the family. The “catastrophically broken” quote was used to great effect by various outlets, as Hoskinson points out “with incredibly incendiary titles, and how catastrophic bugs are prevetning Cardano from updating, and predictably so, the dishonest crypto media is now running articles.”

It would probably serve the Cardano community to keep those comments in-house, especially since as Hoskinson also pointed out that “additional testnet infrastructure” are brought forward by IOHK in order to meet the communities needs in response to issues like this.

Ultimately, Hoskinson is frustrated by the fact that instead of seeing this as another example of how decentralized Cardano is, the key takeaway is going to be incendiary language.

“They are going to take away the headline: Catastrophic bug; Cardano.”
