<p style="margin-left:0px;">At 9:44 P.M. Coordinated Universal Time (5:44 P.M. EDT), the Cardano blockchain deployed its Vasil hard fork, an upgrade that is supposed to increase the network’s capacity and trim transaction costs.</p><p style="margin-left:0px;">Due to its complexity, the blockchain’s developer company Input Output Global (IOG) has called the upgrade, named after the late Bulgarian mathematician and prominent Cardano supporter Vasil St. Dabov, the most ambitious Cardano upgrade to date.</p><p style="margin-left:0px;">Cardano underpins more than 1,000 decentralized projects and ADA, a cryptocurrency with a $15.4 billion market valuation. At press time ADA is trading at 46 cents, up 5.4<strong>%</strong> over the past 24 hours.</p><p style="margin-left:0px;">The high-stakes upgrade has faced multiple delays from an initial June target. In August, Cardano developer Adam Dean <a href="https://twitter.com/adamKDean/status/1560295453966553088">sounded</a> an alarm over the test network’s failures and “rushing”. The news sent Cardano’s ADA token plunging 13% to 46 cents from 54. Addressing the criticisms earlier this month, Tim Harrison, vice president of community and ecosystem at IOG, told <i>Forbes </i>the Sept. 22 date “has been fully agreed upon by the community” and that the developer team was “confident in the code.”</p><p style="margin-left:0px;">Though ADA is one of the 10 largest cryptocurrencies, Cardano is well behind rivals by total value locked (TVL), the key metric for gauging the state of the decentralized finance market supported by blockchains. According to <a href="https://defillama.com/chains">data aggregator DeFi Llama</a>, Ethereum boasts $30.4 billion in TVL, Tron and BSC trail with just over $5.2 billion, while Cardano has a mere $80 million.</p><p style="margin-left:0px;">However, in a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PV_C17noXlA&amp;t=2s">Sept. 21 interview</a>, Charles Hoskinson, the founder of Cardano, expressed hope that Vasil will bring a TVL boost. “I think there'll be kind of a big spike within three to six months post-Vasil because there's a lot of people building who are waiting to deploy [new applications].”</p><p style="margin-left:0px;">Indeed, Vasil is also expected to deliver the second version of Plutus, Cardano’s smart-contract language, which will help developers create faster and more complex decentralized applications on the chain. Cardano’s Long-Awaited Vasil Upgrade Goes Live

<p>Days after its big <a href="https://watcher.guru/news/did-vasil-hard-fork-officially-open-doors-to-cardano">Vasil upgrade</a>, Cardano (ADA) had yet another update on the 27th of September. The Plutus V2 Cost Model network upgrade is now live on the ADA mainnet. The Input-Output team took to Twitter and shared the successful update with the community. </p>
<p>According to the Cardano team, the Plutus V2 Cost Model network upgrade makes DApps (decentralized applications) more efficient to run. Not only that, but DApps are also cheaper with the new update. However, the Input-Output team does admit that the extent of the advantages would depend on the individual DApps themselves. Nonetheless, they highlight that the initial reports look very &ldquo;promising.&rdquo;</p>

</div></figure><p>To showcase Plutus V2&rsquo;s efficiency, Input Output gave the example of Artano, a Cardano-based NFT project. Post utilizing Plutus V2, the NFT project saw over 90% reduction in script size and over 75% reduction in corresponding costs. </p>
<p>IOG stated that following the hard fork, monitoring will continue for at least four epochs before a judgment is taken on further adjustments depending on &ldquo;normal&rdquo; network capacity.</p>

<p>Prior to the Plutus V2 upgrade, the community was eagerly waiting for the Vasil upgrade, which had been delayed twice. A similar excitement swept across the Cardano community once again for the Plutus V2 upgrade. </p>
<p>A similar sentiment was felt with the whales as they lined up to grab ADA off the shelves. According to <a href="https://www.whalestats.com/analysis-of-the-top-100-eth-wallets">WhaleStats</a>&lsquo; data, Cardano was back on the top 10 highest purchased tokens among the 100 biggest BSC whales. </p>
<p>However, the markets have taken another beating at press time. The global cryptocurrency market cap fell by 5.7% in the last 24 hours. <a href="https://watcher.guru/news/ethereum-cardanos-development-activity-lags-behind-these-networks">Ethereum</a> (ETH) fell below the $1.3k level, while <a href="https://watcher.guru/news/bitcoin-community-predicts-btcs-price-for-october-2022">Bitcoin</a> (BTC) fell below $19k once again. </p>

Notably, the marginal change brought about by this new cost model will vary from one DApp to the next. Artano, a Cardano-based NFT project, published the results of extensive testing ahead of the much-anticipated upgrade. There was a reported cost reduction of over 75% and a script size reduction of over 90% when Plutus v2 was used.</p>
<p>Concerns are now being raised regarding the profitability of stake pool operators (SPOs), despite the fact that lowering costs overall is beneficial in bringing in new users of the blockchain.</p>
<h2><strong>Cardano&rsquo;s staking reward of 3.62% does not attract like others.</strong></h2>
<p>With a staking market cap of $11.52 billion, Cardano is the third largest blockchain, according to staking rewards data. Despite the large stake, Cardano&rsquo;s staking reward of 3.62 percent does not attract as many players as other games. Observers contend that the blockchain would not experience hyperinflation or inflation due to the low reward rate.</p>
<p>Sidechains solve this issue, Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson said in response to a user&rsquo;s concerns regarding the profitability of SPOs in light of the Vasil upgrade&rsquo;s significant reduction in transaction fees and low stake rewards. Maintaining the sidechains and receiving payment in native tokens will provide SPOs with multiple revenue streams.</p>
<p>Cardano&rsquo;s community of blockchain enthusiasts and developers is steadily growing. Over 6.1 million native tokens and 1,107 projects are currently built on Cardano, according to recent IOG statistics.</p>

<h2><strong>Sidechains for Cardano&nbsp;</strong></h2>
<p>Adding a sidechain to Cardano opens up opportunities for Ethereum developers who use the Solidity programming language. For instance, developing dApps based on Cardano is simple with the help of the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM).</p>
<p>Milkomeda and Wanchain are currently Cardano&rsquo;s sidechains. As a ZK (zero-knowledge) rollup Layer 2 protocol, Orbis is an additional scalability solution being developed within the Cardano ecosystem.</p>
<p>This year, IOG intends to release a new permissionless EVM sidechain. Developers would be able to write Solidity smart contracts on Cardano as well as develop dApps and tokens that are compatible with ERC20 and the EVM thanks to the sidechain.</p>
