Confirmed With Proof: XRP and ADA Are Not ISO 20022-Compliant

The conversation around XRP’s compliance with ISO-20022 has resurfaced as Vet (@Vet_X0), an XRP Ledger validator, reaffirmed that no cryptocurrency, including XRP and Cardano (ADA), currently meets the standard.

His post was a response to a statement from Charles Hoskinson, Cardano creator, who referenced ISO 20022 as part of an effort to align ADA with evolving financial messaging standards.

In his post, Vet wrote, “Friendly reminder: XRP and ADA are not ISO20022 compliant. No cryptocurrency is.” He supported this point with an image taken directly from the ISO 20022 website, which states that cryptocurrencies “are not inherently ISO 20022 compliant.”

The site adds that “there is a lot of confusion and misleading information on the web referring to ISO 20022 compliant cryptocurrencies.” The renewed focus on the issue follows ongoing public references that often suggest XRP’s infrastructure has been built to meet ISO 20022 standards.

However, as Vet emphasized, the standard defines a messaging format for the secure transmission of data between financial institutions, not for digital assets or their ledgers.

Ripple’s System and ISO 20022 Support

While XRP itself is not ISO 20022 compliant, Ripple’s payment solutions are designed to interact with this messaging framework. Ripple’s enterprise products, including RippleNet and related payment software, have integrated ISO 20022 support to enable financial institutions using their network to communicate in that format.

This distinction is essential, as it separates the XRP token from Ripple’s broader software infrastructure. Vet reiterated this in a follow-up comment after another user suggested the word “compatible” might be more appropriate.

He agreed that XRP, like any other system, could technically interact with ISO 20022-based networks “with the right software.” To illustrate the point, he shared another post clarifying that some of Ripple’s software is ISO 20022 compliant; however, it is unrelated to XRP.

ISO 20022 Compatibility

ISO 20022 is a global standard for exchanging financial information, designed to create consistency across banks and financial institutions worldwide. It defines how messages, such as payments or securities instructions, are structured and transmitted.

The framework applies to systems that manage or send this information, not to currencies or digital assets themselves. Cryptocurrencies operate independently from ISO 20022 protocols. Their compliance would require integration at the system or software level, not through the blockchain’s token.

In Ripple’s case, the company’s integration of ISO 20022 within its enterprise products enables institutions using RippleNet to align with the financial industry’s migration to the new standard, but this does not extend to the XRP ledger or the XRP asset.
