Coinbase Launches x402 Week With New On-Chain Payment Features

Coinbase has introduced “x402 Week,” a developer-focused initiative featuring new integrations, partnerships, and feature releases to expand on-chain payments. The program will culminate in a 402-minute live event in which builders showcase applications developed using the x402 protocol.

The rollout highlights Coinbase’s push to position x402 as a flexible standard for internet-native payments, particularly for developers building decentralized applications and AI-integrated tools.

x402 is a payment protocol for the web where servers respond to paid resource requests with an HTTP 402 message containing payment details. Clients pay, then retry the request with authorization. Stripe manages deposit addresses and automatically captures payments on-chain. While x402 isn’t a tradeable token itself, it uses digital wallets to secure funds. Users can also acquire X402 via Coinbase through supported decentralized exchange trades.

Expanded token support and payment flexibility

A key update is x402’s expanded compatibility with all ERC-20 tokens, enabling developers to accept payments in assets such as USDC, EURC, and others across the Ethereum ecosystem. The system integrates payment methods including EIP-3009 and Permit2, enabling more efficient token transfers and authorization-based transactions.

These upgrades are designed to simplify on-chain payments and broaden the range of assets that can be used within decentralized applications. By supporting widely used token standards, x402 aims to improve accessibility and usability for both developers and end users.

Identity integration and AI monetization tools

Coinbase has also introduced Sign-In-with-X (SIWX), a feature that enables users to access previously purchased content by authenticating with their crypto wallets. The system is compatible with both EVM and Solana wallets and is built on established standards such as EIP-4361 and Sign-In-With-Solana.

In addition, the launch includes the x402 MCP package, which allows developers to monetize tools and integrate payments directly into AI workflows. The feature is designed to streamline how applications handle payments within automated environments.

Meanwhile, Coinbase expanded its crypto-backed lending service to include four additional tokens, XRP, Dogecoin, Cardano and Litecoin, allowing eligible US users to borrow against a broader range of digital assets without selling their holdings.
