Believe it or not, Milkomeda and Nomad have created a bridge between Cardano and Ethereum.

Now you can transfer assets from Cardano to Ethereum and back. I know, right? Read on, and see for yourself.

If you follow the blockchain space at all, you may have heard some of the recent buzz about Milkomeda — a protocol that brings EVM capabilities to non-EVM blockchains, such as Cardano, through the magic of layer-2 solutions like rollups and sidechains. This is expected to open up a whole new world of inter-ecosystem possibilities, and already we are seeing some of it take shape: Nomad has announced that their Ethereum bridge will be connecting to Milkomeda, which means in effect that assets can be sent back and forth between the two blockchains. And it already works! You can visit the development version of Nomad here and try it out for yourself. Mind you, first you’ll need to have MetaMask installed, and you’ll need to configure it to connect to the Milkomeda Cardano Testnet and the Rinkeby Testnet respectively. Also, you’ll need to get some test coins on each network.

So let’s do it!

If you don’t have it already, get MetaMask here. Add it to Chrome (or whichever Chrome-based browser you prefer), create or restore your wallet (a regular mainnet Ethereum wallet will do) and then head over to the Rinkeby Faucet to get some Rinkeby Ether. All good so far? Good. Then proceed on to the Milkomeda Cardano Testnet manual pages to make a Cardano testnet wallet and get yourself some milkTADA.

I probably should mention here that when you send ADA from Cardano to Milkomeda, it becomes milkADA. And when you send Test ADA to Milkomeda, it becomes, well you get it.

Alright, so now we have MetaMask installed, we have some Rinkeby Ether and some milkTADA. Onward to the development version of Nomad.

Now, watch this. I connect my wallet, select Milkomedatestnet as the origin and Rinkeby as the destination, pick my token, enter the amount, and…

That’s it! After a little while, this screen will show up.

Here I can click on the “Block Explorer” link at the bottom to see my transaction.

And now, the other way. I send 1 ETH from Rinkeby to Milkomedatestnet.

Done! And it’s not just Ether and milkADA. You can try it with just about any asset on either blockchain, and it just works! It completely works, and it’s coming to mainnet!

The future is here.
