Charles Hoskinson, the founder of Cardano and the network’s firm IOHK, has unveiled an ambitious roadmap to achieve full decentralization of Cardano by the end of 2025.
In a YouTube session on Thursday, Hoskinson reflected on the recently concluded Constitutional Convention in Argentina, highlighting the global collaboration involving over 50 countries, which marked a pivotal step toward community governance. He further expressed pride in the convention’s success, culminating in 95% of delegates agreeing on a guiding document for Cardano’s future after years of workshops and community engagement.
“It was probably one of the proudest moments of my professional career,” he stated, emphasizing the event’s global inclusivity, with participation spanning all six continents.
He addressed the tension within the Cardano ecosystem regarding differing visions for achieving decentralization, advocating for a system where all key roles are elected by the community and guided by on-chain mechanisms and constitutional law.
Notably, the pundit dismissed non-democratic governance models as unwarranted, comparing them to the bureaucratic inefficiencies seen in modern governments. He also voiced concerns about the potential emergence of self-serving institutions if Cardano’s governance does not fully embrace democratization.
“For my part, I always believe that the key is to build member-based institutions and on-chain governance and get them working well together,” he explained.
Looking ahead, Hoskinson emphasized the necessity of decentralizing Cardano’s governance while acknowledging the challenges involved, heading into next year.
“In 2025, we have some challenges, and those challenges are going to be that we have to fully decentralize the governance of Cardano,” Hoskinson emphasized.
According to him, the journey shall begin in January with the full activation of Cardano Improvement Proposal (CIP) 1694, designed to enhance governance discussions.
Next, the community will work toward ratifying Cardano’s on-chain Constitution, establishing an annual budget process, and, ultimately, the election of the entire constitutional committee by the community. Hoskinson then highlighted that he, IOHK, and his company would step back from direct governance roles, allowing the community to take full control of Cardano’s direction.
“I’m fully prepared for any necessary restructuring in 2025 to take any role in the ecosystem because this is not about Charles Hoskinson or IOHK,” he stated.
That said, Hoskinson concluded by outlining his commitments for the year, which include developing new projects on Cardano to drive its growth, ensuring the community’s voice is heard in governance, and engaging with the broader crypto industry in the U.S. to push for favorable legislation.
“We are this close to greatness,” he said, urging the community to look beyond personal or organizational disputes to achieve a vision where Cardano not only survives but thrives as a decentralized entity.
