Cardano Core Code Migrates to Community Organization

Intersect, a member-based organization for the Cardano ecosystem, has announced the planned migration of the core Cardano code base to its stewardship. Intersect will then support those Intersect members that are maintaining the Repos. From December 16th, administration of all 26 Cardano code repositories will transfer to Intersect and its members, further enabling and empowering its distributed development, with the community driving the future direction of the blockchain.

After six years of initial development and feature cultivation, the Cardano blockchain has reached the age of Voltaire. Guided by a principles-first approach and led by the community, this new age of Cardano advances inclusive accountability for all participants in the ecosystem. This migration forms an essential part of Cardano’s ongoing ‘Voltaire’ era. Intersect launched in July 2023, and since then has on boarded over 900 individual and enterprise members.

Since inception, Cardano has been developed with an open-source framework and a community-led approach. Until now, Input Output Global (IOG), one of the developers of the Cardano blockchain, and around a dozen other organizations have contributed to the code in the repos. The repo migration has been over a year in the making, with Intersect member and pioneer entity, IOG, launching an open-source workstream last October to oversee repository migrations. In August this year, an open source committee was established at Intersect to help support and oversee the move.

The Open Source Committee (OSC) was one of the first committees stood-up at Intersect, with members forming and collaborating on the approach and objectives for Cardano’s open source management. The Cardano community can get involved, by either joining Intersect or following the committee’s progress via updates. 

Chair of the OSC at Intersect & CEO of Modus Create, Pat Sheridan said: “I'm proud of the work the OSC and its first set of technical working groups was able to achieve this year, and most importantly that we were able to accomplish that work consistent with open source ideals. A strong foundation is set for broader community engagement in the coming year.”

Going forward, Intersect will serve as a steward of the underlying technology blueprints for the community beginning with the Cardano Node, core Cardano libraries and components required to operate the blockchain and all of its accompanying documentation, knowledge, and contributors.
