Mithril, according to Mr. Schmiedel’s explanation, functions similarly to existing multi-signature solutions. Transactions in multi-sig systems must be approved by the majority of participants.
The limit is considerably higher in some multi-sig designs: the crypto segment knows 6/7 and 7/8 multi-sig wallets. Mithril multi-sig architecture improves this approach by allowing users to weigh signers’ responsibilities in approval processes based on the number of ADA staked.
This method, developed by Pyrros Chaidos and Aggelos Kiayias of Input Output Global, makes multi-sig designs more equitable and inclusive:
To a sign a message, m possible signers are randomly selected based on their stake. If k out of m sign, a full signature is obtained (…) The parameters for this are very important, as you wouldn’t want just 3 holders “representing” the entire network.
The Mithril design would be useful in a variety of Web3 scenarios. Mr. Schmiedel is confident that it can be used for blockchain checkpoint approval and even a Voltaire-era upgrade.
