Key Points:

  • Former FTX exec Ryan Salame has requested to postpone the start of his prison sentence to continue receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained in a dog attack.
  • Salame previously postponed his prison date from August to October for urgent surgery, a request that was granted by the court.
Former FTX exec Ryan Salame has filed a motion to delay his prison sentence from October 11 until December 7 to allow time for continuing medical care after he was injured by a dog injury this summer.

Former FTX Exec Ryan Salame Seeks Delay in Imprisonment for Medical Care

The request, filed by Salame’s attorney, seeks to provide him with more time to recuperate under the care of his treating physician. In the filing published Wednesday, Salame’s attorney disclosed that the government is opposed to this request.

“On behalf of Ryan Salame, we respectfully request that the Court continue the date for Salame to voluntarily surrender to the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) to begin serving his sentence from Friday, October 11, 2024, to Friday, December 7, 2024,” said the attorney.

This is the second such delay the former FTX exec has requested. He had earlier asked to push his prison sentence from August until October to undergo emergency surgery related to the same injury, which the court granted.

Former FTX Exec Could Get 7.5-Year Sentence at Medium-Security Facility

Through his lawyers, Salame’s legal team described how the dog attacked him on June 29 and that he saw a doctor on July 3, adding that he will require continuing medical care to recover. Facing his sentence, Salame has taken a blithe view of his time in prison, referring to the sentence as “summer camp” in an X post, otherwise describing the upcoming incarceration as an “exciting” one.

In May, Salame was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison by Judge Lewis Kaplan of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.

The former FTX exec becomes the second person to be sentenced following the collapse of the exchange after former CEO Sam Bankman-Fried received a sentence of 25 years imprisonment. Salame’s lawyers have requested that he be designated to serve the sentence in United States Federal Correctional Institution, Cumberland, a medium-security prison in Maryland since it is close to his home.
